What should I do about shin splints and calf pain due to running?

I have been experiencing shin splints, and pain in my calf due to running. What type of stretches should I do to help prevent this from occurring in the future. I also have to run a mile in PE class tomorrow at school, and I need to be up to par due to the fact that is is my last PE day of the school quarter, before break.

OOOOH!!! I have been there! Take a Dixie Cup fill it half way with water and freeze it. Then tear off the top half of the cup and massage in a clockwise circular motion for 10 -15 min. You can do this right before you leave for class too. Sit on the floor on your bottom with a towel. place the towel around the arch of your foot and pull it toward you. Hold for 15-20 secs. repeat with feet pointed out ward and inward. If you have someone to help you, continue to sit on the floor with your feet together and have them pull your feet down (like pointing toes). Again repeat inward and outward.

Also an ace wrap for compression will help too. Just do not make it too tight (circulation). Wrap it so that the wrap pulls the calf muscle toward the shin. Thus releasing the extra stress that is put on the shin.

This will help a little bit but once you get shin splints it is hard to get rid of them if you do not rest. Drink plenty of water and increase your potassium intake (yellow fruits and veges-like bananas). This is an injury that may take months to totally heal. Be careful and after your class take it easy.

As far as prevention, avoid running on hard surfaces like concrete. When possible use elliptical equipment or do running exercises in the shallow end of the pool.

Hope you make it through tomorrow!
